Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 3362

Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked: "In which part of the night is one heard most (that is, supplication or worship is accepted soonest)?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The last half of the night. Then prayer is accepted until true dawn breaks. Then no prayer is to be offered until the sun has risen to the height of one or two spears. Then prayer is accepted until the shadow becomes the length of the spear. Then no prayer is to be offered until the sun has passed its zenith. Then prayer is accepted until the sun is one or two spears' height (that is, that close to setting). Then no prayer is to be offered until the sun has set." After this the narrator mentioned the rest of the hadith; this hadith will come later in the chapter on freeing slaves, if Allah wills.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; the narrator Abu Salamah did not hear from his father.
