Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 273

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), while on the pulpit, relating this about Sayyiduna Musa (peace be upon him): "Once the thought occurred to him: Does Allah Almighty sleep? So Allah Almighty sent an angel to him, who kept him awake for three (nights). Then he gave him two glass bottles, placing one bottle in each of his hands, and instructed him to guard them both. Whenever drowsiness came over him and the bottle was about to fall from his hand, he would wake up and keep them from striking one another, until at last sleep overcame him, his hands met, and both bottles broke." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Thus Allah Almighty set forth an example for him: that if Allah Almighty were to sleep, the heavens and the earth would not remain in their places."
Abu Ya'la recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Umayyah bin Shibl. Al-Dhahabi mentioned him in "Mizan al-I'tidal", but he did not mention that anyone declared him da'if (weak); rather, he cited this hadith in connection with this narrator and declared it weak on his account. And Allah knows best. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Ibn Hibban mentioned this narrator in the book "al-Thiqat".
