Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 2459

Sayyidah Aishah Siddiqah (may Allah be pleased with her) states: Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was praying. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) stood beside the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and began to pray following him. Meanwhile a scorpion came and reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); then it left the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and moved towards Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), so Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) struck it with his sandal and killed it, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw no harm in his killing it.
Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and Abu Ya'la also recorded it. Tabarani's chain contains Abdullah bin Salih, the scribe of al-Layth. Abd al-Malik bin Shu'ayb bin al-Layth says: He is thiqah (trustworthy) and reliable; but the Imams, namely Imam Ahmad and others, declared him da'if (weak). The narrators of Abu Ya'la are the narrators of the Sahih, except Mu'awiyah bin Yahya al-Sadafi: his hadiths from al-Zuhri are sound, as Imam Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) stated, and this narration is one of them; the majority declared this narrator da'if (weak).
