Sayyiduna Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Once he came out to the people's gathering. The prayer was established, and their imam stepped forward; during the prayer he prolonged the sitting. When he completed the prayer, Sayyiduna Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Whoever among you leads us in prayer should complete the bowing and prostration, for behind him are the young and the old, the traveller, the sick and people with work to attend to." When the time of the (next) prayer came, Sayyiduna Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) stepped forward; he completed the bowing and prostrations, but kept the prayer short. When he had finished leading the prayer, he said: "This is how we used to pray behind the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir in full, and Ahmad recorded it in abridged form; that narration has already passed. The narrators of both hadiths are thiqat (trustworthy).
