Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Hearts are of four kinds: a bare heart in which a lamp shines; a covered heart with its covering wrapped over it; an inverted heart; and an open heart. As for the bare heart, it is the heart of the believer, in which is its lamp and in which is its light. As for the covered heart, it is the heart of the disbeliever. As for the inverted heart, it is the heart of the hypocrite, who recognizes (the truth) and then denies it. As for the open heart, it is a heart in which there is both faith and hypocrisy. The example of the faith in it is like a green herb that pure water makes grow, and the example of the hypocrisy in it is like a sore in which pus and blood increase. Whichever of the two increases and overcomes the other, that state overcomes the other state."
Imam Ahmad and Imam al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Saghir recorded it, and its chain contains a narrator, Layth bin Abi Sulaym.
