Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) states: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw two men in Masjid al-Khayf, sitting at the back of the people. On the order of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) they were brought, and their limbs were trembling. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Why did the two of you not pray with us?" They said: "We had already prayed at our lodgings." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Could you not have prayed with us? It would have been voluntary, and the first one would have remained the obligatory one."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this narration in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and he stated that al-Hajjaj bin Artah narrated it in this way from Ya'la bin Ata', from his father, from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him), and that people differed from him in its chain: Shu'bah, Abu Awanah, Hushaym, Ibrahim bin Dhi Himayah, al-Thawri and Hisham bin Hassan narrated it from Ya'la bin Ata', from Ata', from Jabir bin Yazid bin al-Aswad al-Suwa'i. I say: The narrators of the chain of this hadith are thiqat (trustworthy), except that the narrator al-Hajjaj is a mudallis (one who conceals defects in the chain), and he has narrated it with 'an'anah (using "from").
