Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 1898

Sayyiduna Sa'd al-Qaraz (may Allah be pleased with him) states: Whenever the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Quba', Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) would give the adhan so that the people would know that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had arrived, and so that the people would gather in his presence. One day he came and Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) was not with him. The people looked at one another. Then Sayyiduna Sa'd climbed a date palm and gave the adhan. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him, "O Sa'd, why did you give the adhan?" He replied, "May my father and mother be sacrificed for you! I saw that there were few people with you, and I did not see Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) with you either, and I saw these people looking at one another and looking at you, so I feared for you on their account (lest they harm you), and so I gave the adhan." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "O Sa'd, you did well. Whenever you do not see Bilal with me, give the adhan." The narrator states: So Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) gave the adhan three times during the blessed lifetime of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this narration in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. Its chain contains a narrator, Abd al-Rahman bin Sa'd bin Ammar, who is da'if (weak).
