Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "The intensity of the heat is from the fierce breath of Hell, so delay the prayer until it is cooler! (The narrator says: that is, do so when the heat is intense.) Hell complained to its Lord, saying: 'O my Lord, one part of me devours another.' So the Lord permitted it to take two breaths every year: one of its breaths is in winter, in the form of intense cold, and one breath is in summer, in the form of intense heat." (Allamah Haythami says:) I say:
This narration is mentioned in the Sahih and other books in abridged form, without the mention of Hell's complaint.
Al-Bazzar recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Atiyyah, who has been declared trustworthy despite the weakness in him.
