Abu Nadrah narrates: I heard Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), while delivering a sermon on the pulpit of Basrah, say: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Every prophet had one special supplication which he used in this world to obtain a particular result, and I have kept my special supplication stored for the intercession for my Ummah on the Day of Resurrection. I am the leader of the children of Adam, and I do not say this out of pride. I am the first for whom the earth will be split open (on the Day of Resurrection), and I do not say this out of pride. In my hand will be the Banner of Praise (Liwa' al-Hamd); Sayyiduna Adam (peace be upon him) and all others besides him will be beneath my banner, and I do not say this out of pride. The Day of Resurrection will be long and hard for the people, until they say to one another: 'Come with us to Sayyiduna Adam (peace be upon him), the forefather of mankind, so that he may intercede for us in the court of our Lord and that Lord may judge between us.' They will go to Sayyiduna Adam (peace be upon him) and say: 'O Sayyiduna Adam! Intercede for us in the court of your Lord so that He may judge between us.' Sayyiduna Adam (peace be upon him) will say: 'I cannot do this, for I was expelled from Paradise because of my error, and today I am concerned only for myself. Go to Sayyiduna Nuh (peace be upon him).' The people will come to Sayyiduna Nuh (peace be upon him) and say: 'O Sayyiduna Nuh (peace be upon him)! Intercede for us in the court of your Lord so that He may judge between us.' Sayyiduna Nuh (peace be upon him) will say: 'I cannot do this, for I made a supplication because of which all the people of the earth were drowned, and today I am worried only about myself. Go to Sayyiduna Ibrahim, the Intimate Friend of the Most Merciful (peace be upon him)!' They will come to Sayyiduna Ibrahim (peace be upon him) and say: 'O Sayyiduna Ibrahim (peace be upon him)! Intercede for us before your Lord so that He may judge between us.' Sayyiduna Ibrahim (peace be upon him) will say: 'I cannot do this; in Islam I spoke three times with words of double meaning'" (the narrator says: one was his saying, 'I am ill', and another his saying, 'Rather, this biggest of them did it'). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By Allah! Through those words of double meaning he intended nothing but the dominance of the religion of Allah." "(Sayyiduna Ibrahim (peace be upon him) will say:) 'Today I am worried only about myself. Go to Sayyiduna Musa (peace be upon him), a servant whom Allah Almighty chose for His message and with whom He spoke.' The people will come to Sayyiduna Musa (peace be upon him) and say: 'O Sayyiduna Musa (peace be upon him)! Intercede for us before your Lord so that He may judge between us.' Sayyiduna Musa (peace be upon him) will say: 'I cannot do this, for I killed a person, and today I am worried only about myself. Go to Sayyiduna Isa (peace be upon him), who is the Spirit of Allah and His Word.' They will come to Sayyiduna Isa (peace be upon him) and say: 'O Sayyiduna Isa (peace be upon him)! Intercede for us before your Lord so that He may judge between us.' Sayyiduna Isa (peace be upon him) will say: 'I cannot do this; I was taken as a god besides Allah, and today I am worried only about myself. What do you think: if there were some goods in a container that had been sealed, could those goods be taken out until the seal is broken?' The people will reply: 'No!' Then Sayyiduna Isa (peace be upon him) will say: 'Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is the Seal of the Prophets; he is present, and Allah Almighty has forgiven him his past and future sins.'" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) says: "Then they will come to me and say: 'O Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! Intercede for us before your Lord so that He may judge between us.' I will say: 'I am for this task, until Allah Almighty gives permission to whomever He wills and is pleased with.' When Allah Almighty intends to judge between His creation, a caller will call out: 'Where are Sayyiduna Ahmad (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Ummah? Where are Sayyiduna Ahmad (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Ummah?' Then they will come. We are the first and we are the last: we are the last to be raised and the last to be brought to account. The other nations will clear the way for us, and we will walk on, our foreheads and limbs shining from the traces of purification. The other nations will say: 'This Ummah were almost all of them prophets.'"
Abu Ya'la and Ahmad recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Ali bin Zayd, who has been declared trustworthy despite his weakness; the rest of the narrators of both are the narrators of the Sahih. Ahmad recorded these additional words: "I will come to the door of Paradise, take hold of the knocker of the door and knock on the door. It will be said: 'Who are you?' I will reply: 'I am Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).' Then the door will be opened for me. I will come into the presence of my Lord, who will be on His Kursi (the narrator is unsure, or perhaps the words are:) on His throne. I will fall down in prostration before Him and praise Him with such words of praise with which no one before me will have praised Him, and with which no one after me will praise Him. Then it will be said: 'O Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! Raise your head; ask and you will be given, intercede and your intercession will be accepted.' I will raise my head and say: 'O my Lord! My Ummah, my Ummah!' The Lord will say: 'Bring out whoever has such-and-such in his heart.' (Here the narrator Hammad did not remember the words of the narration.) The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then I will return and go into prostration, and I will say some words. Then it will be said: 'Raise your head; speak and you will be heard, ask and you will be given, intercede and your intercession will be accepted.' I will say: 'O my Lord! My Ummah, my Ummah!' It will be said: 'Bring out whoever has such-and-such in his heart', and this amount will be less than the first. Then I will come again and go into prostration and say words like those. It will be said: 'Raise your head and speak, your words will be heard; ask and you will be given, intercede and your intercession will be accepted.' I will say: 'O my Lord! My Ummah, my Ummah!' It will be said: 'Bring out whoever has such-and-such in his heart', and this amount will be even less than the first."
