Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: Once Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came into the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). At that time the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was on a mat whose mark had formed on his body. He submitted: O Messenger of Allah, if you were to spread some bedding, this mark would not form. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: What have I to do with this world? By the One in whose Hand is my soul, the likeness of me and this world is that of a rider who travels on a hot day, takes shade under a tree for a short while, then sets off from there and leaves it (the tree or its shade) behind.
Ahmad, al-Tabarani and al-Bazzar recorded it. The narrators of Ahmad are the narrators of the Sahih, except for Hilal bin Khabbab, and he is thiqah (trustworthy).
