Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says: You offer more (voluntary) prayers than the Companions of Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and worship with greater effort, yet they were better than you. The people asked: O Abu Abd al-Rahman! Why is that? He replied: Because they were more detached from the world and more eager for the Hereafter.
Al-Tabarani recorded this narration; its chain contains a narrator, Umarah bin Yazid, a student of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), and I do not know him; the rest of the narrators of this narration are thiqat (trustworthy).
