Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to him one morning and said: "O Messenger of Allah! By the Lord of the Ka'bah, we are ruined!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What has happened?" They said: "Hypocrisy, hypocrisy!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Do you not bear witness that there is no god but Allah, He alone, without partner, and that Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is His servant and His Messenger?" They said: "Yes." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is not hypocrisy." The narrator says: Then they came to him a second time and said: "O Messenger of Allah! By the Lord of the Ka'bah, we are ruined!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What has happened?" They said: "Hypocrisy, hypocrisy!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Do you not bear witness that there is no god but Allah, He alone, without partner, and that Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is His servant and His Messenger?" They said: "Yes." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is not hypocrisy." The narrator says: Then they came to him a third time and said: "O Messenger of Allah! By the Lord of the Ka'bah, we are ruined!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What has happened?" They said: "Hypocrisy!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Do you not bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and that Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is His servant and His Messenger?" They said: "Yes." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is not hypocrisy." They said: "When we are with you, we are in a particular state, and when we get up and leave you, the affairs of the world and the worries of our families overtake us." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If, when you leave me, you remained in the same state you are in (that is, while you are with me), the angels would shake hands with you in the streets of Madinah."
Abu Ya'la recorded it; its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih, except Ghassan bin Burzin, who is thiqah (trustworthy).
