Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says: "The believer shows affection and is shown affection, and there is no good in one who neither shows affection nor is shown affection."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this narration in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains a narrator, al-Mas'udi, who suffered from confusion (ikhtilat), and the remaining narrators of this narration are the narrators of the Sahih. (Allamah Haythami says:) I say: These two chapters have already passed in the Book of Etiquette; likewise the chapter: "Love your friend moderately, for perhaps one day he may become one you dislike"; and likewise the chapter: "Tanaqqahu wa tawaqqahu (Examine him and be wary of him)."
