Sayyiduna Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "The servant seeks the pleasure of Allah Almighty and keeps on doing so, until Allah Almighty says: O Jibril! My servant so-and-so is striving to please Me, so I am pleased with him. Then Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) says: May the mercy of Allah Almighty be upon so-and-so. The angels who carry the Throne say it, the angels next to them say it, until the inhabitants of the seven heavens say it, and then this is sent down to the earth." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: This is the verse which Allah Almighty has revealed to you in His Book: "Indeed, those who believe and do righteous deeds, the Most Merciful will appoint for them affection." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sometimes a servant keeps doing deeds that incur the displeasure of Allah Almighty, so Allah Almighty says: O Jibril! So-and-so seeks My displeasure; beware, My wrath will descend upon him. So Sayyiduna Jibril says: The wrath of Allah Almighty will descend upon so-and-so. Then the bearers of the Throne say it, and those near them say it, until the inhabitants of the seven heavens say it, and then this is sent down to the earth."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this narration in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
