Sayyiduna Zayd bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: We were with Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him). He asked for something to drink, and water and honey were brought. When it was placed in the hand of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), he burst into tears and wept bitterly, until we thought that something had befallen him, although we had not asked him about anything. When he finished, we asked: O Caliph of the Messenger of Allah, why did you weep? He said: "Once I was with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and I saw him as if he were pushing something away from himself, but I could not see anything. I said: O Messenger of Allah, what is it that you are pushing away, when I see nothing? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The world came towards me, and I said: Keep away from me. It said to me: You will not fall into my snare. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) says: This weighed heavily on me, and I feared that I might have gone against the way of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and that the world had caught up with me."
Al-Bazzar recorded it; its chain contains Abd al-Wahid bin Zayd al-Zahid, who is da'if (weak) according to the majority. Ibn Hibban mentioned him in Kitab al-Thiqat and said: His hadith is taken into consideration when the narrator above him is thiqah and the narrator below him is thiqah. The rest of its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
