Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir al-Juhani (may Allah be pleased with him) reports this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "When you see that Allah Almighty has given a servant what he loves, while that servant still persists in his sins, then this is istidraj (a gradual drawing toward ruin) for that person from Allah Almighty." Then he recited this verse: "So when they forgot that by which they had been reminded, We opened to them the doors of every thing, until, when they rejoiced in what they had been given, We seized them suddenly (with punishment), and they were left in despair. So the people who had done wrong were cut off at the root, and all praise belongs to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat from his teacher al-Walid bin al-Abbas al-Misri, and he is da'if (weak).
