Sayyiduna Zayd bin Harithah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A man asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about the time of the morning prayer. He said: Offer this prayer behind me today and tomorrow. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) reached the plain of Namirah at al-Juhfah, he offered this prayer when true dawn had broken. Then when he reached Dhu Tuwa, he delayed it, until people began saying: Has the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away? Then people said: It would be better if we prayed. Meanwhile the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out and offered this prayer before the sun. Then he turned to the people and said: What were you saying? The people said: We said that it would be better if we prayed. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Had you done so, a punishment would have befallen you. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called the man who had asked and said: The time of the prayer is between these two times.
Imam Abu Ya'la and Imam al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir recorded it as a narration of Ali bin Abdullah bin Abbas from Sayyiduna Zayd bin Harithah (may Allah be pleased with him), and Ali did not live in the time of Sayyiduna Zayd bin Harithah (may Allah be pleased with him).
