Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says: "Whoever seeks fame, Allah Almighty will (on the Day of Resurrection) expose his desire for fame; whoever shows off, Allah Almighty will expose his showing off on the Day of Resurrection; and whoever adopts humility before Allah Almighty out of modesty, Allah Almighty will grant him elevation on the Day of Resurrection."
Al-Tabarani recorded it as a mawquf narration (halted at the Companion), which Abu Razin narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), and I do not know him (that is, Abu Razin); the rest of its narrators have been declared trustworthy.
