Amr bin Murrah states: An elder whose kunyah was Abu Yazid narrated this hadith to me. He states: Once I was sitting with Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), when Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Satan runs through the son of Adam in the channels of the blood and where the soul is (that is, through his whole being). At this, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) wept and said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever seeks fame before people through his deed, Allah Almighty will expose his desire for fame before the hearers of His creation, and will make him small and despised." Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and the wording is his; he recorded something similar in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, in which the words are: "On the Day of Resurrection Allah Almighty will expose his desire for fame before His creation."
Ahmad recorded it with the statement of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) abridged, and in it he said: Tears flowed from the eyes of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). Al-Tabarani named that elder: his name is Khaythamah bin Abd al-Rahman. On this basis, the narrators of Ahmad and of one of the chains of al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir are the narrators of the Sahih.
