Sayyiduna Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "On the Day of Resurrection some people will be ordered to go towards Paradise, until, when they come near it, smell its fragrance, see its palaces and see the things in it that Allah Almighty has prepared for the people of Paradise, it will be called out to them: 'Turn back from it (the place near Paradise)! These people have no share in this Paradise.' They will then return with such regret that those before them will not have returned with the like of it. They will say: 'O our Lord! Had You admitted us into Hell before showing us the reward of Yours that You have shown us, and what You have prepared in it for Your friends, it would have been easier for us.' The Lord will say: 'This is exactly what I intended for you. When you were in private, you used to challenge Me with grave things, and when you met people, you displayed humility. You showed people something contrary to what you gave Me from your hearts. You feared people and did not fear Me; you honoured people and did not honour Me; you abandoned things for the sake of people and did not abandon them for My sake. Today I will make you taste a painful punishment, along with having deprived you of the reward.'"
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, Abu Junadah, and he is da'if (weak).
