Aswad bin Yazid narrates: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) recited this verse: "Except for the one who has taken a covenant with the Most Merciful." Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: On the Day of Resurrection Allah Almighty will say: "Whoever has a covenant with Me, let him stand up." The people said: "O Abu Abd al-Rahman! Teach us (that is, teach us how we should make a covenant with Allah Almighty)." Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Recite this:
'Allahumma fatir al-samawati wal-ard, alim al-ghaybi wal-shahadah, inni a'hadu ilayka fi hadhihi al-hayat al-dunya: annaka in takilni ila nafsi tuqarribni min al-sharr, wa tuba'idni min al-khayr, wa inni in athiqu illa birahmatik, faj'alhu li indaka ahdan tu'addihi ilayya yawm al-qiyamah, innaka la tukhlifu al-mi'ad'
(O Allah, Originator of the heavens and the earth, Knower of the unseen and the seen! I make a covenant with You in this worldly life that if You entrust me to my own self, You will bring me near to evil and far from good, and I trust only in Your mercy; so make this a covenant for me with You, which You will fulfil for me on the Day of Resurrection. Indeed, You do not break the promise.)"
The narrator says: In this narration, the narrator Zakariyya added these words from the narrator Qasim:
'Kha'ifan mustajiran, mustaghfiran raghiban ilayk'
((I make this covenant) in a state of fear, seeking refuge, seeking forgiveness, and longing for You.)
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, al-Mas'udi, who is thiqah (trustworthy) but had become confused (ikhtilat) in his memory; the rest of its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
