Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: It was the practice of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that when he was asked for something and he intended to do it, he would say: "Very well"; and when he did not intend to do it, he would remain silent. He would not say "no" to anything. Once a Bedouin came to him and asked him for something, and he remained silent; he asked him again, and he remained silent; he asked him again, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), as if rebuking him, said to him: "O Bedouin! Ask for whatever you wish!" We felt great envy for that man, and we thought: Now he will ask for Paradise. The Bedouin submitted to him: "I ask you for a mount." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You shall have it." Then he said to him: "Ask!" (that is, ask for something more). He said: "I ask you for provisions for the journey." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You shall have them." Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) says: We were astonished at this. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "How great is the difference between the asking of this Bedouin and that of the old woman of the Children of Israel!" Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) told: "When Sayyiduna Musa (peace be upon him) was commanded to cross the sea, he reached the sea, and the faces of his animals were turned away and they went back. Sayyiduna Musa (peace be upon him) asked: 'O my Lord! What is the matter?' The Lord said to him: 'You are near the grave of Yusuf; carry his bones with you!' The grave of Sayyiduna Yusuf (peace be upon him) had become level with the ground (that is, no trace of it remained), and Sayyiduna Musa (peace be upon him) did not know where his grave was. The people said: 'If anyone can know about this, it may be an old woman of the Children of Israel who knows where the grave of Sayyiduna Yusuf (peace be upon him) is.' Sayyiduna Musa (peace be upon him) sent a message summoning that woman and asked: 'Do you know where the grave of Sayyiduna Yusuf (peace be upon him) is?' The woman answered: 'Yes!' Sayyiduna Musa (peace be upon him) said: 'Tell us about it!' The woman said: 'No! By Allah! That will not happen until you give me what I ask of you.' Sayyiduna Musa (peace be upon him) said: 'You shall have it.' The woman said: 'I ask you that I be with you in Paradise in the same rank in which you will be.' Sayyiduna Musa (peace be upon him) said: 'Just ask for Paradise!' The woman said: 'No! By Allah! I want to be with you.' Sayyiduna Musa (peace be upon him) kept going back and forth with her; then Allah Almighty revealed to Sayyiduna Musa (peace be upon him): 'Give this woman this, for it will not cause you any loss.' So Sayyiduna Musa (peace be upon him) gave it to her; the woman told them about the grave, they took out the bones and crossed the sea." Al-Tabarani recorded this narration in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and its chain contains narrators whom I do not know.
