Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw me moving my lips. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "O Abu Umamah, what are you reciting?" I said: "I am remembering Allah." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Shall I not guide you to something that is greater than your remembrance through night and day (that is, in earning reward)? Recite:
'Alhamdulillahi adada ma khalaqa, walhamdulillahi mil'a ma khalaqa, walhamdulillahi adada ma fi al-samawati wa ma fi al-ard, walhamdulillahi mil'a ma ahsa kitabuhu, walhamdulillahi adada mil'i ma ahsa kulla shay'in'
"All praise belongs to Allah alone, as numerous as His creation; all praise belongs to Allah alone, filling His creation; all praise belongs to Allah alone, as numerous as what is in the heavens and what is in the earth; all praise belongs to Allah alone, as much as the count recorded in His Book; and all praise belongs to Allah alone, in number as much as that which fills the count of all things." (The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:) Then recite 'Subhan Allah' in the same way as well."
Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Learn these words, and teach them to your descendants after you."
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains Layth bin Abi Sulaym, who is a mudallis (one who conceals defects in his chain).
