Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 16574

Sayyiduna Sabrah bin Ma'bad (may Allah be pleased with him), the Companion of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), states: Once people from various tribes gathered with Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Let every man speak about the honour of his people and the virtue found among them." So every man took part in the conversation until the turn came to a man from the tribe of Juhaynah. He spoke, but he was unable to complete what he was saying. Sayyiduna Imran bin Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) turned towards him and said: "O member of the tribe of Juhaynah! Speak openly, for I bear witness that I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'Juhaynah are from me and I am from them. They become angry at my anger and pleased at my pleasure, and I become angry at their anger and pleased at their pleasure. Whoever angers them has angered me, and whoever angers me has angered Allah Almighty.'" Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "You are mistaken; this hadith is about Quraysh." So Sayyiduna Imran bin Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Mu'awiyah bin Harb has called me a liar and has reviled me for what I related about the tribe of Juhaynah. I have not lied. Had I wished to lie, my words would have been about my own people, the tribe of Muzaynah. Rather, one day I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say (if I were to verify it, you were dead at that time, i.e. you had not yet even become Muslim) — The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'These people are from me and I am from them.' He (peace and blessings be upon him) said this about the tribe of Juhaynah, on the day Uyaynah disputed with him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also said: 'When they become angry, I will become angry, and in their pleasure lies my pleasure.' This is a kindness, and no small kindness, and they are not like the tribes of Dhakwan and Ri'l, nor like the clans who are among the earlier people of Juhaynah."
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains al-Harith bin Ma'bad, whom I do not know, and the narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy).
