Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 16526

Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) says: When the Ansar harvested the dates from their palm trees, each man would divide the dates into two portions, one of them smaller than the other. Then they would put the palm branches with the smaller portion. Then the Muslims (the Muhajirun) would be given the choice, and they would take the larger portion, and the Ansar would take the smaller portion because it had the branches and the like in it. This continued until Khaybar was conquered. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You have fully discharged to us what was binding upon you. Now, if you wish to be content with your share of Khaybar and to have your fruits wholly for yourselves, then do so." They said: "You had a condition upon us, and we had a condition upon you: that Paradise would be ours. We have done what you asked of us; will we have what we made our condition?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That is yours."
Al-Bazzar recorded it by two routes, and both contain the narrator Mujalid, about whom there is disagreement; the rest of the narrators of one of the two are the narrators of the Sahih.
