Muhajir bin Dinar narrates: Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) once passed by Marwan; this was at the time when fighting took place and he (Marwan) had been struck down. He said: "O son of al-Zarqa'! Had I known that you were alive, I would have finished you off." Abd al-Malik held this against him. Then, when Abd al-Malik became Caliph, he (Abu Sa'id) was brought to him, and Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Observe the instruction of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) concerning me." Abd al-Malik bin Marwan asked: "What is that?" He said: (The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:) "Protect the good among them (that is, the Ansar) and overlook the wrongdoers." The narrator says: Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him) was the husband of Sayyidah Asma' bint Yazid bin al-Sakan bin Amr bin Haram (may Allah be pleased with her).
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this narration, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
