Reports on the first generation and those who followed them
Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 16403

وَفِي رِوَايَةٍ : سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - يَقُولُ : " خَيْرُ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ الْقَرْنُ الَّذِي بُعِثْتُ أَنَا فِيهِمْ ، ثُمَّ الَّذِينَ يَلُونَهُمْ ، ثُمَّ الَّذِينَ يَلُونَهُمْ ، ثُمَّ الَّذِينَ يَلُونَهُمْ ، ثُمَّ يَكُونُ قَوْمٌ تَسْبِقُ شَهَادَتُهُمْ أَيْمَانَهُمْ ، وَأَيْمَانُهُمْ شَهَادَتَهُمْ " .
In one narration the wording is: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "The best of this ummah is the generation in which I was sent, in which I am present; then the generation of those after them, then the generation of those after them, then the generation of those after them. Then there will be people whose testimony will precede their oath and whose oath will precede their testimony."
