Sayyiduna Wa'il bin Hujr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When news reached us of the appearance of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), I set out as a delegate on behalf of my people until I came to Madinah. Before meeting the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), I met his Companions, and they told me: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave us glad tidings about you before you came; three days before your arrival he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave us the glad tidings." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had said: "Wa'il bin Hujr is about to come to you." Then I met the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He welcomed me, spread out his cloak for me and seated me on it. Then he had the people called, and the people gathered around him. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took his place on the pulpit and seated me on the pulpit as well; I sat on the step below him. Then, after praising and extolling Allah Almighty, he said: "O people! This is Wa'il bin Hujr. He has come to you from the distant regions among the lands of 'Hadramawt,' and he has come of his own consent, not under compulsion. He is from the family of kings. O Wa'il! May Allah Almighty bless you and your offspring." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came down from the pulpit. He provided me with a lodging to stay in that was far from Madinah, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah bin Abi Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with him) to take me to that lodging. I set out from there, and Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) set out with me. At some point on the way, Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Wa'il! The hot sand is hurting my feet; seat me behind you." I said: "I would certainly seat you on this she-camel, but you are not of the standing to sit behind kings, and I dislike being reproached on your account." Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Then give me your sandals, so that I may protect myself with them from the heat of the sun." I said: "I am not stingy with these two pieces of leather, but you are not one of those who wear the clothing of kings, and I dislike being reproached on your account." The narrator says: When I went back to my people, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave me three kinds of letters: one of them was purely for me, in which I was given precedence over my people; one was for me and my family, concerning my property present here; and one letter was for my people. In the letter that was specifically for me, this was written: "Seeking blessing through the name of Allah Almighty. This is from the Messenger of Allah, Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), to al-Muhajir bin Abi Umayyah: Wa'il has been appointed supervisor for collecting the charities from the nobles of Hadramawt." In the letter that was for me and my family, this was written: "Seeking blessing through the name of Allah Almighty, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. This is from the Messenger of Allah, Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), to al-Muhajir bin Abi Umayyah, on behalf of the sons of this group and the sons of the nobles of Shanu'ah: whatever owned (land) and cultivation they have there, and lands and places, and river (or water), and salt, and the outlying areas of settlements, and whatever property they have inherited, all of it is under my protection and in my safekeeping; Allah Almighty is their Protector, and the believers are helpers in this." In the letter that was for me and my people, this was written: "Seeking blessing through the name of Allah Almighty, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. This is from the Messenger of Allah, Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), to Wa'il bin Hujr and the elders and nobles of Hadramawt: that they will establish the prayer and give zakah, which will be given from the camels and the sheep, and (zakah will be due) on their owners at a specific minimum (nisab). In Islam there is no room for jalab, janab, shighar or 'wirat' (hiding animals to avoid zakah). For every ten men of the military expeditions, as many dates shall be given as fit into a bag. Whoever sells fruit before it ripens, this will be forbidden. And every intoxicant is unlawful." When Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) became ruler, he sent a man from Quraysh named Busr bin Abi Artah. He said to him: "Gather the people of the surrounding areas to yourself and set out with your army. When you have gone beyond the borders of Syria, take up your sword and kill whoever refuses to pledge allegiance to me until you reach Madinah. Then enter Madinah and kill whoever refuses to pledge allegiance to me. And if you find Wa'il bin Hujr alive, bring him to me." That man did so. He found Sayyiduna Wa'il (may Allah be pleased with him) alive and brought him to Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him). By the order of Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him), arrangements were made to receive him. Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) gave him permission to enter and seated him with himself on his couch. Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) asked him: "Is this couch of mine more excellent, or was the back of your she-camel more excellent?" I said: "O Commander of the Believers! I was close to the Age of Ignorance and the age of disbelief, and that was the custom of the Age of Ignorance. Now Allah Almighty has blessed us with Islam, and Islam has covered over what I did." Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "What is the reason you did not help us, when Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) had made you his trusted companion and relative by marriage?" I said: "You are fighting a man who is closer to Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) than you." Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: "How can he have more right to Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) than me, when I am more closely related to Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) by lineage?" I said: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) established brotherhood between Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), and a brother is closer than a cousin. And I cannot fight against the Muhajirun." Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: "Are we not among the Muhajirun?" I said: "Have we not kept away from both your groups? And another proof is this: once I was present with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his blessed head and looked towards the east; at that time many people were present with him. Then he brought his gaze back and said: 'Tribulations will come to you like pieces of the dark night.' Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) described the gravity of this matter, how soon it would come and how vile it would be. From among those present, I said to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): 'O Messenger of Allah! What is meant by the tribulations?' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'O Wa'il! When two swords oppose each other in Islam, then keep away from both of them.'" Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: "Have you become a separate faction?" I said: "No! But I am a sincere well-wisher of the Muslims." Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Had I heard this and known it, I would not have had you brought here." I said: "Have you not seen what Sayyiduna Muhammad bin Maslamah (may Allah be pleased with him) did at the time of the martyrdom of Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him)? He took his sword to a rock and struck the rock with his sword until he broke it, and he said: 'These people will attack us (or these people want to load burdens on us).'" I said: "Then what shall I do with this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): 'Whoever loves the Ansar loves them because of his love for me, and whoever hates the Ansar hates them because of his hatred for me'?" Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Choose for yourself whichever city you wish, for now you will not be going back to 'Hadramawt.'" I said: "My clan are in Syria, and my family are in Kufah." Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "One man of your family is better than ten men of your clan." I said: "I will find no joy in going back to 'Hadramawt,' and in any case it is not proper for an emigrant to go back to the place from which he emigrated, unless there is a reason, in which case the ruling is different." Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: "What is that reason?" I said: "The saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) concerning the tribulations: that when you people are in dispute, we keep away from you, and when you people are united, we come to you. This is the reason." Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I appoint you governor of Kufah; go there." I said: "After the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), I have not accepted any government office for anyone. Do you not know that Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) wanted to make me a governor and I refused, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) wanted to do so and I refused, and Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) wanted to do so and I refused, yet I did not abandon my pledge of allegiance to them? When the people of our region apostatised, a letter from Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) came to me, and I remained among those people until Allah Almighty brought them back to Islam, and that happened without my holding any government office." Then Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) called Abd al-Rahman bin Umm al-Hakam and said: "Set out! I appoint you governor of Kufah. Take Sayyiduna Wa'il (may Allah be pleased with him) with you, honour him and fulfil his needs." Abd al-Rahman said: "O Commander of the Believers! You have thought ill of me. You are ordering me to honour a man whom I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) honour, and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) did so, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) did so, Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) did so, and you yourself did so as well." Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) was pleased with this. Sayyiduna Wa'il (may Allah be pleased with him) says: So I came to Kufah with Abd al-Rahman, and then Sayyiduna Wa'il (may Allah be pleased with him) remained there until his death. The narrator Muhammad bin Hujr says: "Wirat" means gambling, "aqwal" means kings, and "ayahil" means nobles.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Saghir and al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains Muhammad bin Hujr, who is da'if (weak).
