Sa'd, the freed slave of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), narrates: A man complained to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about Sayyiduna Safwan bin al-Mu'attal (may Allah be pleased with him), that he composed this poetry. The man said: "O Messenger of Allah! Safwan has satirised me through this poetry." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Leave Safwan alone! For Safwan's tongue is sharp, but his heart is pure."
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains Amir bin Salih bin Rustam, whom more than one scholar declared thiqah (trustworthy) and a group declared da'if (weak), and the rest of its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
(Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: It is established in the Sahih that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I know nothing about him except good."
