Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) migrated, he stayed at the home of Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) went to take part in a campaign in the land of the Romans. He passed by Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him), and Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) did not treat him well. He went on, and when he returned from the campaign, Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) again did not treat him well and did not even raise his head to look at him. So Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) told me that we (that is, the Ansar) would see others being preferred over us after the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Then what did the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) command you to do?" Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "He (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded us to be patient." Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Then be patient." The narrator says: Then Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) came to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) in Basrah; Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) had appointed Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) as governor of Basrah. He said: "O Abu Ayyub! I wish to vacate my residence for you, just as you vacated your residence for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." Then Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) ordered his family, and they came out of the house, and he gave Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) everything that was inside the house. When the house had been vacated, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "Do you have any need?" Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "My need is that I receive my stipend, and eight slaves who will work on my land." His stipend was four thousand, so Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) multiplied it five times, giving him twenty thousand and forty slaves as well.
Al-Tabarani recorded it.
