Sayyidah Aishah Siddiqah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: When Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) died, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) began to weep and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) began to weep as well, so much so that the weeping of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) could be distinguished from that of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and the weeping of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) from that of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him). The narrator says: I asked Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her): Was the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) weeping? Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) replied: No! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was holding his blessed beard in his fist.
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy), though there is disagreement about some of its narrators.
