وَعَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ قَالَ : لَقَدْ رَأَيْتُنِي وَقُثَمَ وَعُبَيْدَ اللَّهِ ابْنَيْ عَبَّاسٍ وَنَحْنُ صِبْيَانٌ نَلْعَبُ ، إِذْ مَرَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - فَقَالَ : " ارْفَعُوا هَذَا إِلَيَّ " . فَحَمَلَنِي أَمَامَهُ ، وَقَالَ لِقُثَمَ : " ارْفَعُوا هَذَا إِلَيَّ " . فَحَمَلَهُ وَرَاءَهُ ، وَكَانَ عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ أَحَبَّ إِلَى عَبَّاسٍ مِنْ قُثَمَ فَمَا اسْتَحْيَا مِنْ عَمِّهِ أَنْ حَمَلَ قُثَمَ وَتَرْكَهُ . قَالَ : ثُمَّ مَسَحَ عَلَى رَأْسِي ثَلَاثًا ، كُلَّمَا مَسَحَ قَالَ : " اللَّهُمَّ اخْلُفْ جَعْفَرًا فِي وَلَدِهِ " .
قَالَ : قُلْتُ لِعَبْدِ اللَّهِ : مَا فَعَلَ قُثَمُ ؟ قَالَ : اسْتُشْهِدَ ، قُلْتُ : اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ بِالْخَيْرِ قَالَ : أَجَلْ . رَوَاهُ أَحْمَدُ ، وَرِجَالُهُ ثِقَاتٌ .
قَالَ : قُلْتُ لِعَبْدِ اللَّهِ : مَا فَعَلَ قُثَمُ ؟ قَالَ : اسْتُشْهِدَ ، قُلْتُ : اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ بِالْخَيْرِ قَالَ : أَجَلْ . رَوَاهُ أَحْمَدُ ، وَرِجَالُهُ ثِقَاتٌ .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I remember myself, Qutham and Ubaydullah, the two of them being sons of Sayyiduna al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), when we were children playing. Meanwhile the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by us and said: Lift this one up to me! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) seated me in front of him. Then he said about Sayyiduna Qutham: Lift this one up to me, and he seated him behind him. Ubaydullah was dearer to Sayyiduna al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) than Qutham, yet the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) felt no awkwardness before his uncle in taking Qutham and leaving Ubaydullah. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed his hand over my head three times, and each time he did so he prayed: O Allah, take the place of Ja'far in caring for his children! The narrator says: I asked Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with him): What became of Sayyiduna Qutham (may Allah be pleased with him)? He said that he was martyred. I said: Allah and His Messenger knew best what was good. Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: Yes!
