Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 15523

Abu Bakr al-Hudhali narrates: I went to visit al-Hasan and said: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) holds a distinguished position with regard to the Qur'an. He said: Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say: This young man is like the elders; he has a tongue that asks many questions and a heart that understands well. He would stand on this pulpit of ours on the evening of Arafah, recite Surah al-Baqarah and Surah Al Imran, and then go on explaining them verse by verse. He is an overflowing, brimming bucket (of knowledge).
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this narration, and Abu Bakr al-Hudhali, one of its narrators, is da'if (weak).
