Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When Sayyidah Fatimah bint Asad bin Hashim (may Allah be pleased with her), the mother of Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him), passed away, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to her body and sat by her head. He said: O my mother! May Allah Almighty have mercy on you. You were in the place of my mother after my mother. You would stay hungry yourself and feed me to my fill; you would stay in old clothes yourself and give me new clothes; you would not eat fine things yourself but would feed them to me; and by this you sought the pleasure of Allah Almighty and the abode of the Hereafter. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave the order, and this lady was washed three times. When the water containing camphor came, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) poured it with his own blessed hand. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took off his shirt and gave it for her to be dressed in, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) shrouded her in sheets over that shirt. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called Sayyiduna Usamah bin Zayd (may Allah be pleased with them both), Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) and a black slave, and they dug the grave. When they reached the lahd (side niche), the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) dug it with his own blessed hand and took its soil out with his own hand. When he had finished this, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went down into it and lay down in it. Then he recited: "Allah is the One who gives life and gives death, and He Himself is Ever-Living and will not die. Forgive my mother Fatimah bint Asad, prompt her with her argument, and widen her grave for her through the means of Your Prophet and the prophets before me; indeed You are the Most Merciful of those who show mercy." the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said four takbirs in the funeral prayer of Sayyidah Fatimah bint Asad (may Allah be pleased with her). the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), Sayyiduna al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) lowered this lady into the lahd.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this narration in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, Rawh bin Salah, whom Ibn Hibban and al-Hakim declared trustworthy, and there is weakness in him. The remaining narrators of this narration are the narrators of the Sahih.
