Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent a marriage proposal to Sayyidah Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her). Her father did not want to marry her to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Sayyidah Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her) prepared food and drink and invited her father and some men of Quraysh. Those people ate and drank wine until they became intoxicated. Then Sayyidah Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "Muhammad bin Abdullah has proposed marriage to me; marry me to him." So her father married her to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Then Sayyidah Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her) perfumed him and gave him a hullah (a robe) to wear; that is how they used to treat fathers. When the man's intoxication wore off, he saw that he was perfumed and had a robe on his body. He said: "What is the matter? Why is this?" Sayyidah Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her) told him: "You have married me to Muhammad bin Abdullah." Her father said: "Would I marry (my daughter) to the orphan raised by Abu Talib? No! By my life (that cannot be)!" Sayyidah Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "Do you not feel ashamed? Do you want to make yourself look foolish before Quraysh and tell people that you were drunk?" Sayyidah Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her) kept persuading him until the man was content.
Ahmad and al-Tabarani recorded it, and the narrators of Ahmad and al-Tabarani are the narrators of the Sahih.
