Sayyiduna Sa'id bin Zayd bin Amr bin Nufayl (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) sent a message to Marwan bin al-Hakam in Madinah so that he would convey the message concerning Yazid, the son of Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him). A man from the people of Syria said: "He will not accept what you say until Sayyiduna Sa'id bin Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) comes to me and gives the pledge of allegiance, for he is the most eminent man of the city; when he gives the pledge, the rest of the people will give it too."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this narration. Its chain contains a narrator, Ata' bin al-Sa'ib, who is thiqah (trustworthy) but later suffered from confusion (ikhtilat), and the remaining narrators of this narration are the narrators of the Sahih.
