Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 14766

Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) conquered Makkah, he then went on to Ta'if. There he kept it under siege for seventeen or perhaps eighteen days, but the town was not conquered. Then he set off swiftly in the morning, or perhaps in the evening, then he made camp, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O people, I will go ahead of you, and I urge you to treat my family ('itrah) well. Your meeting place is the Pool. By the One in whose Hand is my soul, they (that is, the enemy) shall establish prayer and pay zakah, or else I will send to them a man from among my own who will strike the necks of their fighting men and take their women and children captive." The narrator says: The people thought it might be Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) or Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) by the hand and said: "This is the one."
Abu Ya'la recorded this narration. Its chain contains a narrator, Talhah bin Jabr, whom Yahya bin Ma'in declared thiqah (trustworthy) according to one report, and al-Juzajani declared da'if (weak). The rest of its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
