Shaqiq bin Salamah Abu Wa'il narrates: Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) related: Satan encountered one of the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Satan challenged him to wrestle, and the Muslim threw him down and pressed him with his thumb. Satan said: Let me go and I will teach you a verse; whoever of us (devils) hears this verse turns his back and leaves. The Muslim let him go, but Satan refused to teach him the verse. Satan again challenged him to wrestle, and the Muslim again threw him down and pressed him with his thumb. Satan said: Let me go and I will teach you a verse; whoever of us (devils) hears it turns his back and leaves. The Muslim let Satan go, and Satan again refused to teach him. Then the Muslim wrestled him once more, threw him down, pressed him with his thumb and said: Tell me about it. Satan refused to tell him. When this happened the third time, Satan told him: It is the verse in Surah al-Baqarah, namely: "Allah, there is no god but He, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all" (that is, Ayat al-Kursi), the whole verse. Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked: O Abu Abd al-Rahman! Who was that Muslim man? He said: Who could he be other than Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him)?
