Ibn Shihab narrates: Sayyiduna Umar bin Abd al-Aziz asked Abu Bakr bin Sulayman bin Abi Hathmah: "Who was the first to have it written that this is from the servant of Allah, the Commander of the Believers (Amir al-Mu'minin)?" Abu Bakr bin Sulayman replied: "Al-Shifa' bint Abdullah, who was one of the women among the early emigrants, told me that Labid bin Rabi'ah and Adi bin Hatim both came to Madinah. They came to the mosque and found Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) there. They both said: 'O Ibn al-As! Seek permission for us to come in to the Commander of the Believers.' Sayyiduna Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: 'By Allah! You two have named him exactly right: he is the commander (amir) and we are the believers (mu'minun).' After that Sayyiduna Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) went in to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: 'Peace be upon you, O Commander of the Believers.' Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: 'What kind of name is this?' He said: 'You are the commander and we are the believers.' So from that day this title came into use in writing."
Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
