Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to send Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) to Yemen, he consulted his Companions, among whom were Sayyiduna Abu Bakr, Sayyiduna Umar, Sayyiduna Uthman, Sayyiduna Ali, Sayyiduna Talhah, Sayyiduna al-Zubayr and Sayyiduna Usayd bin Hudayr (may Allah be pleased with them). When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) consulted them, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Had you not consulted us, we would not have spoken about this." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "In matters in which revelation is not sent to me, I am just like one of you." The narrator says: The people discussed the matter, and each person stated his opinion. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "O Mu'adh! What is your view?" I said: "My view is that what Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said is correct." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, Allah Almighty, above the heavens, dislikes that Abu Bakr should err."
Tabarani recorded it. I do not know the narrator named Abu al-Atuf. The remaining narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy), though there is disagreement about some of them.
