Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: One night my camel went missing. I passed by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was tying the saddle for Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her). He asked me: O Jabir! What has happened? I said: My camel is lost (the narrator is unsure; perhaps the words are:) my camel has gone off. It was a dark night. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Your camel will be over there; go and take it! The narrator says: I went in the direction the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had told me, but I did not find the camel. I came back to him and said: O Messenger of Allah! May my father and mother be ransomed for you, I did not find it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: Your camel will be over there; go and take it. The narrator says: I went in the direction the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had told me, but I did not find it. I came back and said: O Prophet of Allah! May my father and mother be ransomed for you, by Allah! I did not find it. The narrator says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: Wait. Then, when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had finished his task, he took me by the hand and set off with me until we came to the camel. He handed it over to me and said: Here is your camel. The narrator says: We set off. I was riding my camel and was behind the people. My camel was having difficulty walking; it was taking very short steps. I said: Alas, my mother! All I have is a camel that takes short steps. The narrator says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was a little behind me. He heard what I said, came up to me and said: O Jabir! What was it you said a little while ago? The narrator says: I had forgotten what I had said. I said: O Prophet of Allah! I did not say anything. Then I remembered what I had said, and I said: O Prophet of Allah! I said: Alas, my mother! I have a camel that takes short steps. The narrator says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) struck the camel on its hindquarters with a stick (the narrator is unsure) with my stick. The narrator says: Then it began to go faster than anything; it had never gone so fast since I had been riding it, so much so that I had to pull back on its reins. The narrator says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: Will you sell me your camel? I said: Very well. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: For how much? I said: For one uqiyah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Excellent, excellent, a camel for one uqiyah. The narrator says: I said: O Messenger of Allah! There is no camel in Madinah that I would like us to have in its place. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I take it for one uqiyah. The narrator says: I got down from the saddle onto the ground. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: What is the matter? I said: This has become your camel. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Ride your camel. I said: It is not my camel; rather it is your camel. The narrator says: We used to ask the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to reconsider twice, and when he gave us the order a third time, we would not ask him to reconsider any more. The narrator says: I rode that camel until I came to my paternal aunt in Madinah al-Munawwarah. I said to her: Do you know that I have sold this camel of mine to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for one uqiyah? The narrator says: I felt that she did not like it, because it was a good camel. The narrator says: Then I took some leaves and fed them to that camel. Then I took hold of its reins and led it on foot to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). I found the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) standing in one place, talking with a man. I said: O Messenger of Allah! Take your camel. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took hold of its reins and then ordered Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) to weigh out one uqiyah for Jabir and to give full weight. I went with Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him), and he weighed out one uqiyah for me and gave me full weight. Then I went back to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he was standing talking with that same man. I said: He has weighed out a full uqiyah and paid it to me. The narrator says: Meanwhile I went back towards my house without realising it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: Where is Jabir? The people said: He has gone home. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Go to him and bring him back to me. The messenger of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came running and said: O Jabir! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is calling you. The narrator says: I came, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Take your camel. I said: This is not my camel; O Messenger of Allah, this is your camel. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Take your camel! I said: This is not my camel; O Messenger of Allah! This is your camel. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Take your camel! So I took it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By my life! We did not benefit you so that you would get down from it (or: part with it)." The narrator says: Then I came to my paternal aunt with the camel and with one uqiyah, and I said to her: Did you see? The Messenger of Allah gave me one uqiyah and also returned my camel to me. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: This narration is reported in the Sahih in abridged form.
Imam Ahmad recorded this narration, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih, except for Nubayh al-Anazi, whose case is different; Ibn Hibban declared him thiqah (trustworthy). (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Before this, the hadith narrated by Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) about the payment of his father's debt has already passed; the incident mentioned in the Sahih is not mentioned in it, and it passed in the chapter on paying debts on behalf of the deceased.
