Sayyiduna Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Great humility and devotion were found in al-Rahhal bin Ghanmuwayh (a certain man); he recited the Noble Qur'an regularly and did good deeds regularly. One day the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out to us while al-Rahhal was also sitting with us along with some other people. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "One of these people will go to Hell." Sayyiduna Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I looked over those people, and among them were Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah al-Dawsi (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Abu Arwa al-Dawsi (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna al-Tufayl bin Amr al-Dawsi (may Allah be pleased with him), and al-Rahhal bin Ghanmuwayh. I kept looking at them and wondering, and I thought: Who could that wretched one be? When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, Banu Hanifah apostatised. I asked: What became of al-Rahhal bin Ghanmuwayh? The people told me that he had fallen into trial, in that he testified in favour of Musaylimah against the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had appointed him to share in the authority after him. I said: What the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said is the truth. (The narrator says:) He heard al-Rahhal saying: "Two rams are locking horns, and the dearer of the two to us is our own ram."
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and in this narration he gave this man's name as "Rahhal"; al-Waqidi and al-Mada'ini also stated it this way, and Abd al-Ghani bin Sa'id followed the two of them, but he was mistaken about this. Most people said that his name is with the letter "J" (Rajjal); Imam al-Daraqutni (may Allah have mercy on him) and Ibn Makula stated this. The chain of this narration contains al-Waqidi, and he is da'if (weak).
