Abu Imran al-Jawni narrates (the narrator says: I think he narrated it from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him)): Wahb bin Umayr took part in the Battle of Uhud as a disbeliever. He was wounded and lay among the slain. A man from the Ansar passed by him and recognised him; he placed his sword on his belly and it went through and came out of his back, then he left him to his fate. When night came and the cold struck him, he fled from there to Makkah and later recovered. Once he and Safwan bin Umayyah were sitting in the "Hatim", and he said to Safwan bin Umayyah: Were it not for the problem of my children and the problem of the debt binding upon me, I would have wished to be the one who would personally kill (Sayyiduna) Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). Safwan said: How would you have done it? He said: I am a horseman who cannot be overtaken. I would go to him and strike him with the sword by deception, then I would go off to the mountain, and no one could reach me. Safwan said: Then your children and your debt are my responsibility. Wahb bin Umayr went out from there, prepared his sword, dipped it in poison and then set out for Madinah, intending to kill Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). When he came to Madinah, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) saw him; he became worried about him and this weighed heavily on him. He said to the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): I have seen that Wahb has come, and his coming makes me suspicious; he is a treacherous man, so form a ring around your Prophet. The Muslims formed a ring around the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). When Wahb came, he came and stood by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O (Sayyiduna) Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! May you have blessings in the morning. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah Almighty has given us a better greeting in its place." He said: The last time I met you, you used to greet just as I do, and you would be pleased with it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him: "Why have you come?" He said: I have come to pay the ransom for your prisoners. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What is this sword for?" He said: We carried these swords on the day of the Battle of Badr as well, but we neither succeeded nor attained success. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then what was the thing you said to Safwan when the two of you were in the 'Hatim': Were it not for the matter of my children and my debt, I would personally kill (Sayyiduna) Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) told him the whole matter, and Wahb said: What! How is it that you are relating this? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) repeated the matter to him, and he said: Previously you used to give us news of the people of the earth and we would deny what you said, and now my view of you is that you are giving news of the people of the heavens. So I bear witness that there is no god but Allah Almighty, and that you are the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: O Messenger of Allah! Give me your turban. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him his turban, and then he went back to Makkah. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) says: When he came, he was more hateful to me than a pig, and when he went back he was dearer to me than my own children.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the "Sahih".
