Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 14017

Awn bin Abdullah bin Utbah reports this statement of his father: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not pass away until he had read and written.
Al-Tabarani recorded it and said: This hadith is munkar (denounced), the narrator Abu Aqil is da'if (weak), and this hadith contradicts the Book of Allah. Its meaning is that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Utbah (may Allah be pleased with him) had learnt to read and write before the passing of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); that is, he was a person of understanding in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). And Allah knows best.
