Book of the Signs of Prophethood
بَابٌ فِيمَنْ سَمِعَ بِهِ وَلَمْ يُؤْمِنْ بِهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ .
One who hears of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and does not believe in him

وَعَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " وَالَّذِي نَفْسُ مُحَمَّدٍ بِيَدِهِ ، لَا يَسْمَعُ بِي أَحَدٌ مِنْ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ وَلَا يَهُودِيٌّ وَلَا نَصْرَانِيٌّ [ وَمَاتَ ] وَلَمْ يُؤْمِنْ بِالَّذِي أُرْسِلْتُ بِهِ ، إِلَّا كَانَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّارِ " ، قُلْتُ : هُوَ فِي الصَّحِيحِ وَلَفْظُهُ : " لَا يَسْمَعُ بِي أَحَدٌ مِنْ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ يَهُودِيٌّ وَلَا نَصْرَانِيٌّ " ، رَوَاهُ أَحْمَدُ ، وَرِجَالُهُ رِجَالُ الصَّحِيحِ .
Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By the One in whose Hand is the soul of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), whoever of this Ummah hears of me, or any Jew or Christian who hears of me, and dies in a state in which he has not believed in what I have been sent with, that person will be among the people of Hell." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: This report is mentioned in the Sahih, and its wording is: "Whoever of this Ummah, Jew or Christian, hears of me."
