Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: Once a man reviled Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) while the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting there. the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was amazed and began to smile. When the man increased in reviling Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) answered back some of what he said, whereupon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) became angry and stood up. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) came to him and said: "O Messenger of Allah! That man was reviling me while you remained seated, but when I answered one of his remarks, you became angry and stood up?" the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There was an angel with you who was answering on your behalf; when you answered his remark, Satan came in between, and I could not sit with Satan." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Abu Bakr! There are three things, all of which are true: whenever a servant is wronged in some way and he leaves it to Allah, Allah Almighty, because of it, honours that person with His help; whenever a person opens a door of giving, intending by it to keep ties of kinship, Allah Almighty increases his wealth because of it; and whenever a person opens a door of begging, intending by it to increase his wealth, Allah Almighty, because of it, increases his scarcity." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Abu Dawud recorded this narration only up to the words: "I could not sit with Satan."
Ahmad recorded it, and al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat with similar wording; the narrators of Ahmad's narration are the narrators of the Sahih.
