Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked about a man, saying: 'Who knows him?' One of those present said: 'I do.' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: 'What is his name?' He replied: 'I do not know.' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: 'What is his father's name?' He replied: 'I do not know.' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'This is not acquaintance until you know his name, his father's name and the name of his tribe; if he falls ill, you visit him, and if he dies, you follow his funeral.'"
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Amr bin Dinar, the steward of the family of al-Zubayr, who is matruk (abandoned).
