Sayyiduna al-Aswad bin Sari' (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "I have praised my Lord with various words of praise, and I have praised you too." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "As for your Lord, He loves praise. Present the words with which you have praised your Lord." The narrator says: I began reciting poetry to him. Then another man came and asked permission to enter; he was a tall man of brown complexion, with hair gone from the front of his head, big-built and of strong body. The narrator says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made me fall silent because of him. Here the narrator Abu Salamah demonstrated how the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had silenced him: the way it is done with a cat. The narrator says: The man came in, talked for a while, and then left. Then I began reciting poetry to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) again. After a while that man came back, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made me fall silent for him again; the narrator also described how he silenced him that time. I said: "O Messenger of Allah! Who is this man for whom you made me fall silent?" He said: "This is a man who does not love falsehood; this is Umar bin al-Khattab."
Imam Ahmad recorded it, and al-Tabarani recorded something similar with various chains. The narrators of the hadith recorded by Imam Ahmad are the narrators of the Sahih.
