Al-Harith bin Umayrah narrates: I set out until I came to al-Mada'in. There was a man there wearing worn-out clothes, and he had a piece of red leather with him which he was kneading. He turned and looked at me, and gestured to me with his hand: "O servant of Allah, stay where you are!" So I stood, and I asked the person with me: "Who is this man?" They said: "This is Sayyiduna Salman al-Farisi (may Allah be pleased with him)." Then he went into his house and put on white clothes, then came out, took my hand, shook hands with me and asked how I was. I said: "O Abu Abdullah! You have never seen me before, nor have I seen you; you do not know me, nor do I know you." He said: "Yes indeed, by the One in whose hand is my soul, my soul recognised your soul when I saw you. Are you not al-Harith bin Umayrah?" I replied: "Yes." Then Sayyiduna Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Souls (in the world of souls) are assembled troops. Those that knew one another (in the world of souls) for the sake of Allah Almighty have affection between them (in this world), and those that did not know one another before Allah Almighty remain apart (in this world)."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat through various chains in abridged form. The chain of this report contains Abd al-A'la bin Abi al-Musawir, who is matruk (abandoned). Its other chains contain al-Hajjaj bin Furafisah, whom Yahya bin Ma'in and others declared thiqah (trustworthy), and in whom there is weakness; and a narrator Abu Amr or Abu Umayr, who narrated from Sayyiduna Salman al-Farisi (may Allah be pleased with him)
this report, and I do not know him. The rest of the narrators of one of the two chains of al-Mu'jam al-Kabir are thiqat (trustworthy).
