Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Layla narrates: Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) looked at the son of Abd al-Hamid, whose name was Muhammad, while that man was saying to him: O Muhammad! May Allah Almighty do such-and-such to you. So Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) named him Abd al-Rahman. Then he sent for the Banu Talhah, who were seven people; their chief and eldest was Muhammad bin Talhah. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) changed their names, and Muhammad bin Talhah said: O Commander of the Believers, I ask you by Allah (not to do this), for Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) gave me this name. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Get up! For there is no way (to change the name of) someone whom the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has named.
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and these words are his; Ahmad also recorded it, and the narrators of Ahmad are the narrators of the Sahih.
